Seed to Series A in Africa: the 2025 numbers and what they mean for your raise
Four trackers, one conclusion: African investors wrote fewer, larger early-stage cheques in 2025, and the road from seed to Series A got longer.

Every January, four or five trackers publish their count of African startup funding for the year before. Their totals never match, and in 2025 they did not either. But on the question founders care about most, how hard it is to get from seed to Series A, they point the same way.
First, why the trackers disagree
Each tracker counts something different. Africa: The Big Deal counts deals of $100k or more, including equity, debt and grants, and excludes exits. Partech counts equity and debt separately. Briter counts disclosed deal volume. For 2023, the published African totals ranged from $2.9B to $4.1B depending on the tracker1. So when you quote a number to an investor, quote one tracker and say which one. Mixing them is the fastest way to lose credibility in a data-led conversation.
The headline: a recovery
Africa: The Big Deal counts $3.2B raised by African startups in 2025, up 40% on 20242. Partech counts $4.1B, up 25%3. Either way, 2025 was better than 2024.
But the composition matters more than the total. Of Partech's $4.1B, equity was $2.4B, up 8%, and debt was $1.6B, up 63%. Debt is now 41% of capital invested, up from 17% in 20193. Much of the recovery was lending, not equity.
Seed: the same money, fewer deals
Partech records $462M of seed funding in Africa in 2025, down 4%, across 311 rounds, down 1%3. The year-on-year change is small. The longer view is not: since the 2021 peak, the number of seed deals is down 38% and the amount is down 25%. Seed funding peaked at $958M in 20223.
In practice, a seed round in Africa is now one of roughly 300 a year across the whole continent.
Series A: fewer, bigger cheques
Series A tells the clearest story. Partech records $610.6M across 95 Series A rounds in 2025, with round count down 2%. The average ticket rose 21% to $7.0M3. Investors are writing fewer, larger Series A cheques.
| Africa, 2025 | Amount | Rounds | Signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seed | $462M (−4%) | 311 (−1%) | Deal count −38% since 2021 peak |
| Series A | $610.6M | 95 (−2%) | Average ticket +21% to $7.0M |

Concentration at the top
The other trackers show where the growth went. Africa: The Big Deal counts almost 500 ventures raising $100k or more in 2025, up just 2% and flat against 2023. The number raising $10M or more rose 73% to 692. Briter finds that fewer than 5% of deals exceeded $50M, yet those deals took half of all disclosed funding4.
The recovery was real, but it went to companies that were already large enough to raise big rounds.
Nigeria: the tightest year in a while
Nigerian founders had a harder 2025 than the continent. Partech records Nigerian startup equity down 21% to $412M, with deal count down 19% to 833. Briter puts Nigeria at 8% of disclosed African funding, its lowest share since 2019, even though Nigeria still recorded the most deals of any market4. BusinessDay's own count puts Nigerian funding at $343M, down 17%5. The trackers disagree on the level but agree on the direction: down.
The time problem
The other half of the picture is time. Carta's analysis of 12,249 seed rounds from Q1 2018 to Q3 2025 found that no seed cohort since Q3 2021 has reached a 30% Series A graduation rate within two years. The Q4 2019 cohort reached 32.6%6. The median time from seed to Series A is now 2.1 years, up from 1.5 years in 2019. At the 75th percentile it is 3.4 years7.
Carta's data is US-heavy, and we found no equivalent dataset for Africa. But it sits next to a global figure that should worry any founder: the median time from a startup's last raise to shutdown is 22 months8. If the median gap from seed to Series A is longer than the median runway after a raise, many companies will run out of time before they reach the next round.
What it means for your raise
- Plan for a longer gap. Budget your seed round for the time it now takes to reach Series A, not the time it took in 2019. If your plan assumes 18 months, test what happens at 30.
- Arrive with evidence, not a story. With roughly 95 Series A rounds a year across Africa, investors can choose. Poor product-market fit was cited by 43% of failed VC-backed startups in CB Insights' global study8. Retention data, revenue quality and organic growth are what separate a claim from a case.
- Expect a bigger bar at Series A. A $7.0M average ticket means investors are underwriting a larger outcome. Your evidence needs to show the business can absorb that capital, which means an operating model that does not depend on the founders doing everything.
- Look at debt if your revenue supports it. Debt was 41% of capital invested in 20253. If you have predictable, collected revenue, non-dilutive capital may extend your runway to the point where your equity story is stronger.
- Quote your numbers carefully. Use one tracker per figure and name it. Investors who follow the market will check.
